Sinking of the Lusitania - Storybook Postcard No 1 - Along the Irish Coast

The Lusitania the pride of the Atlantic, belonged tothe Cunard Co, and held the record between Liverpool and New York and from Liverpool to New York and back. She was built by Brown and Co, on the Clyde, and was deservedly the most popular of Atlantic liners.

Sinking of the Lusitania - Storybook Postcard No 2 - Sighting the submarine

About one-and-half hours steaming from Queenstown a German submarine was noticed and without giving any warning two torpedoes were fired at the Lusitania, one stiking the bow and the other the engine room, with fatal results.

Sinking of the Lusitania - Storybook Postcard No 3 - The Explosion

The explosion was terrifying and fatal, a hevy list took place allowing lifeboats to be launched on one side only. Within 14 minutes it was seen that the fatal moment had come.

Sinking of the Lusitania - Storybook Postcard No 4 - To the Boats

Immediately on the torpedo taking effect the cry was "To the boats!" These were launched without delay but with the usual British discipline and pluck, the first to be looked after were the women and children.

Sinking of the Lusitania - Storybook Postcard No 5 - Rescue Ships Arrive

On receipt of the distress call, steamers, trawlers and tugs steamed hard and fast to the rescue, arriving two hours after the final plunge of the liner, to pick up the survivors. Over 1,500 perished.

Sinking of the Lusitania - Storybook Postcard No 6 - The Last Plunge

The last sight of the famous vessel, the pride of the whole kingdom; one more victim, the worst of all of German Kultur. One more atrocity to add to the number which makes the whole German nation stink in the nostrils of all Christian nations
